The Golden Gate Hotel stands tall as a true testament to the city’s vibrant past. As the oldest hotel in Las Vegas, it has witnessed the city’s transformation from a humble railroad stop to the dazzling Entertainment Capital of the World. From Prohibition to the largest roulette bet in Las Vegas’s past, the Golden Gate has been here for it all. Over 100 years of rich history are encased within the walls of the Golden Gate Hotel, and there is no doubt it will accumulate at least 100 more.
The history of Golden Gate Hotel, Las Vegas: The most historic hotel in Vegas
Built in 1906 as Hotel Nevada, the Golden Gate Hotel has surpassed the test of time, making it an icon among the ever-evolving Las Vegas skyline. Located downtown, it became the city’s first prominent hotel and a popular stop for travelers. With its stunning Beaux-Arts architectural style, the Golden Gate Hotel has seamlessly merged old-world charm with modern touches.
With its glowing neon sign, this place became an alluring beacon that drew in adventurous souls from far and wide. It’s been a bastion of excitement, attracting thrill-seekers and risk-takers, ready to try their luck at the gaming tables. But it’s not all fun and games.
The Golden Gate has always had an eye for innovation. In 1907, it became the first hotel in Las Vegas to have a telephone and later, in 1927, it introduced the city’s first electric sign outside its doors. When the hotel installed the first phone in Las Vegas, the number was simply “1,” and you could practically hear the buzzing excitement reverberating through the city.
As the years rolled on, the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino embraced its unique history while keeping up with the pulse of Vegas. It underwent various renovations, adding stylish modern touches while preserving its vintage character. Today, the Golden Gate still stands tall and proud, a charming link between the past and the future.
With its friendly atmosphere and creative spirit, this iconic establishment continues to enchant visitors from every corner of the globe. Step into a world where the past and present collide in a dazzling display of Las Vegas magic.
Original bones kept intact
In keeping with the times, the Golden Gate has opted to add to its structure and renovate accordingly. However, if you meander over to the high-limit slots, you’ll find the wood arches from part of the original structure. Another fun discovery you’ll find is a small peek-a-boo door where you can see part of the hotel’s original concrete wall.
A fountain with original tile from the courtyard can also be found within the walls of the Golden Gate. Wander into the lobby area, and you will come upon more historic pieces, including slot machines from the 40s through the 60s, gaming ledgers, poker chips, chip racks, hotel room keys, guest ledgers and some fan-favorite whiskey bottles from the hotel’s earliest days.
If that isn’t enough originality for you, guests can rent one of the LV 10 original rooms. These only cost a dollar to rent when the doors first opened to guests. The rooms are smaller and less ostentatious than the Las Vegas suites and casino hotel rooms most are accustomed to. Nevertheless, what the rooms lack in size they more than compensate for in antiquity, charm and sophistication.
