The “Number One” Casino in Las Vegas
If you missed it earlier, we’ll say it again: Golden Gate is the oldest casino in the city of Las Vegas. The address assigned to the property is literally 1 Fremont Street.
It was also the first property in Las Vegas to install a telephone, a 1907 hand-cranked Kellogg, to be exact. Can you guess the phone number? Yes, it was “one.” Nothing before and nothing after, just “one.” You have to start somewhere, right?
Although many hotels and casinos followed, the Golden Gate set the standard for Las Vegas hospitality and continued to raise the bar throughout the decades. Other Las Vegas firsts the Golden Gate can claim include:
- The first electric sign was installed in 1927
- The first casino surveillance system with two-way mirrors was used in the 1950s
- The first property to introduce the famous Las Vegas shrimp cocktail in 1959

Today, when you approach the Golden Gate’s hotel lobby, you’ll find a display case holding several unique artifacts that include original 1907 gaming ledgers, an authentic model of Vegas’ first telephone (the phone number was 1), and Prohibition-era whisky bottles found in the walls during a recent renovation.
